NH Historical Society Award Will Help Preserve Farm THE POORE FAMILY FOUNDATION NCC RECEIVES $10,500 GRANT

CONCORD, NH-The New Hampshire Historical Society today presented a $10,500 grant to The Poore Family Foundation for North Country Conservancy to continue their work restoring the Poore Family Homestead in Stewartstown, NH, for public use and historical interpretation.

"We greatly admire and appreciate the major undertaking to preserve this one hundred acre farm that offers such a complete picture of family farm life in the northern Connecticut River Valley in the early 1800s," said John Frisbee, executive director of the New Hampshire Historical Society.

"By preserving this extraordinary Northern New Hampshire historical resource, The Poore Family Foundation is providing an important service for all the people of this state."

Frisbee presented the award to Rick Johnsen, President of The Poore Family Foundation NCC, which was created in 1978 to help perpetuate the traditional spirit, values, and way of life of the settlers of the headwaters of the Connecticut River Valley. J.C. Kenneth Poore, founder of The Poore Family Foundation for North Country Conservancy, bequeathed his family farm, including the land, buildings and all its contents to the foundation for this purpose.

The New Hampshire Historical Society grant will be used to help create a safe environment for historical records and documents at the Poore Family Farm and to assist in documenting, cataloging, conserving, and interpreting these materials for public education and benefit. The Society has asked The Poore Family Foundation to seek funds from other sources to match the grant award.
The grant from the Society is made possible through a bequest from Percy H.Titus, who specified that his gift to the New Hampshire Historical Society be used to benefit historical and genealogical research in Upper Coos County.

"The excellent work and great dedication of the board of The Poore Family Foundation in preserving this historical gem of the north country are the kind of effort Percy H. Titus hoped to further with his gift," Frisbee said.
"I think he would be pleased that his legacy helped to preserve this important collection."

The grant award demonstrates the New Hampshire Historical Society's vital interest in the history and heritage of the North Country, according to Frisbee. The Society is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing New Hampshire history. It operates the Museum of New Hampshire History in Concord, the Granite State's only statewide history museum, as well as the Tuck Library in Concord, one of the finest genealogical research libraries in New England. The Society has been collecting and preserving manuscripts, photographs, furniture, and art from all regions of New Hampshire for close to two hundred years. Museum and library staff provide technical assistance and guidance to local historical societies throughout the state, offering workshops, publications, and other support.
